What is ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy)?

ACT is an evidence-based therapy, developed by Steven Hayes, that builds psychological flexibility: the ability to make room for hard thoughts and feelings while still acting on what matters to you. Rather than trying to get rid of difficult feelings, ACT helps you change your relationship to them, so they stop dictating your choices. Russ Harris popularized it for a general audience in The Happiness Trap.

Can I use this toolkit without a therapist?

Yes. The toolkit is designed to stand alone, and most people can practice the skills on their own and feel a difference. If a loss or change has knocked the ground out from under you and you can't find it again, or low mood and anxiety are lasting most days, working with a therapist who uses ACT can help you apply the skills to your specific situation.

What is a reality slap?

A reality slap is Russ Harris's term for the moment the life you have and the life you wanted split apart, whether suddenly (a layoff, a diagnosis) or slowly (a parent's decline, your own aging). The gap between what is and what you wanted is painful, and ACT offers a way to stand in it, carry the feeling, and keep moving toward what matters rather than closing it by force.
