Mapping Out Your Cycle
A printable, EFT-informed worksheet for couples caught in the same painful loop, where one partner feels unprioritized or overloaded and the other feels nothing they do is enough. It walks you through three conversations to map the cycle and step out of it together.
Free to print and share for personal or clinical use. Educational, not a substitute for therapy.

What's inside
- Three things to know first, including why the cycle, not your partner, is the problem
- A before-you-start setup so the conversations stay safe
- Conversation one: name the pattern, the moves each of you makes when you feel disconnected
- Conversations for the feelings underneath the moves, and for turning toward each other instead
Who it's for
Couples who keep landing in the same argument no matter the topic, and who want to see the cycle clearly enough to interrupt it.

FAQ
How do you map your negative cycle as a couple?
+
You map your cycle by describing what each partner does when you feel disconnected (one usually pushes or protests, the other pulls back or shuts down) and then the softer feelings underneath each move. Once you can both see the pattern as a shared problem, the cycle becomes the target instead of each other. This worksheet walks through it in three conversations.
What is the negative cycle in EFT?
+
The negative cycle in Emotionally Focused Therapy is the self-reinforcing loop a couple falls into when they feel disconnected: each partner's protective move, pursuing or withdrawing, triggers the other's, so the pattern keeps compounding. EFT treats the cycle itself as the problem, not either partner, which is what lowers the blame and lets change happen.
How do you get out of a negative cycle in your relationship?
+
You get out of the cycle by learning to spot it in the moment and say so together, then reaching for the vulnerable feeling underneath your own reaction instead of the reactive move. When both partners can say 'we are in the cycle again' and share what is really going on underneath, the intensity drops and the real conversation can finally happen.
