FAQ
How do couples rebuild trust after a betrayal?
+
Couples rebuild trust in phases, not all at once, and the Gottman Method describes the path as Atone, Attune, Attach. Atone means the partner who broke trust takes full responsibility and stays with the hurt without defending; attune means rebuilding emotional understanding; attach means slowly rebuilding closeness. This map walks through each phase.
What does a breach of trust break?
+
A trust rupture breaks more than the specific event; it breaks the hurt partner's sense of safety, their read on reality, and their belief that the relationship is a reliable place. Seeing each of those losses separately, rather than as one wound, makes the repair more workable. The handout maps what usually needs rebuilding.
Can a relationship recover after broken trust?
+
Yes, many relationships recover after broken trust when both partners are willing to do the work, though it takes time and a structured process. The partner who broke trust has to atone without defensiveness, and the hurt partner has to be able to move toward repair rather than only replaying the injury. Couples therapy is often what makes that possible.
